Derby supporters praise Waghorn despite play-off heartbreak at Wembley

The Championship play-off final is a game such high stakes that it can feel like the losers have a mountain to climb in order to even get back to that position next season.

Derby County’s case – after losing 2-1 to Aston Villa at Wembley yesterday – is especially challenging because many of their top performers are on loan and the likes of Ashley Cole will retire.

But one player they have for keeps is Martyn Waghorn, signed from Ipswich Town last summer as Frank Lampard looked to add firepower to his attacking options.

And in the aftermath of Wembley heartache, Waghorn was the subject of vast praise from the Derby supporters, who want him to help them to promotion via the automatic route in 2019/20.

After two sixth-placed finishes and play-off failures, the onus is on Lampard to go one better next time around and get a club with high expectations and a talented squad back into the big time.

Waghorn could be a big part of that, offering a more direct alternative to the intricate passing play Lampard uses as Plan A, and he’s certainly been a hit with his new fans in his first campaign…
