Derby County lost 2-1 to Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final yesterday, after goals from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn.
Jack Marriott pulled one back for a Rams side who hit their stride in the final 20 minutes but didn’t do enough in the early part of the second half to merit the victory.
That means that another season in the second tier beckons for the Rams but there has been plenty to be optimistic about for a side who played some fantastic football in Frank Lampard’s first season in charge.
But while failing to gain promotion can mean a hard reset for many sides, Derby may need even more of a rebuild because many of their top players were on loan.

Harry Wilson and Mason Mount stand out from an attacking perspective but Fikayo Tomori at centre half has showed his class and really come of age this season.
The on-loan Chelsea man was clearly gutted after yesterday’s loss and took to Twitter to post a heartbroken message and the Derby supporters were keen to show their thanks for all his efforts this season.
They know that in all likelihood, Tomori won’t be back next season, but they dearly would love to have him again…
