Derby fans hail captain Keogh after unlikely assists helps seal Wembley berth

With Derby plotting to do something no Championship club had ever done before in the play-offs, overturning a first leg home defeat to progress to the final, the odds were against them at Elland Road last night.

The Rams have already performed fantastically at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea and beaten Manchester United on their own patch but last night the pressure was at its most acute.

Richard Keogh might have expected his contribution to be limited to a clean sheet against a hugely potent attack or at a push, a set-piece goal at a crucial time.

But with the game ticking into its final minutes and Derby 3-2 up over a ten-man home side, the Republic of Ireland international took the bull by the horns, exchanging passes through midfield before bursting into space and laying in Jack Marriott to get the winner.

Not many Derby fans would have expected Marriott to miss but nobody would have banked on Keogh making such a vital and classy contribution that high up the pitch at the vital moment.

Unsurprisingly, they took to Twitter to hail the contribution of their captain who they hope can go on and lift the trophy at Wembley later this month…
