‘Cracking performance’: Derby fans rave about Matthew Clarke after Huddersfield win

The defender is on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion until the end of the season.

Derby County kicked off their 2019/20 campaign in style by defeating Huddersfield Town 2-1 in West Yorkshire.

The Rams showed no hangover effects from last season’s defeat to Aston Villa in the Play-Off Final at Wembley, looking comfortable throughout. Tom Lawrence putting the Terriers to the sword with a first-half brace.

It hasn’t been an overly busy summer for the Rams with just three new players added to the squad. Matt Clarke has joined on loan from Brighton, Kieran Dowell on loan from Everton and Krystian Bielik has signed permanently from Arsenal.

Clarke and Dowell both featured last night, with the central defender, in particular, looking the part.

The 22-year-old only signed for Brighton from Portsmouth this summer. The Seagulls opting to loan him out rather than use him in Graham Potter’s first season in charge of the club.

Clarke cost Brighton a reported £4 million, according to the East Anglian Daily Times, and he certainly showed his class last night.
