Dennis Bergkamp has admitted he’s still baffled by something Arsene Wenger said during his time at Arsenal.

Speaking on Seaman Says, the Arsenal legend reflected on the Invincibles season and admitted he still can’t believe that Arsene Wenger said his side could go unbeaten before the campaign had even begun.

The Gunners remain the only side in Premier League history to win the title without suffering a single defeat throughout the campaign.

Wenger received his fair share of criticism from Arsenal supporters towards the end of his tenure. But he remains their best manager of the modern area.

Now, Dennis Bergkamp has been discussing the genius of his former boss and reflected on the Invincibles season.

Bergkamp baffled by Wenger prediction

Speaking on Seaman Says, Bergkamp admitted that he never expected to go unbeaten in the 2003-04 season.

“The Invincibles season, you were expected to be in the top two again,” he said. “Maybe expected to be champions.

“But to do it the Invincibles way, yeah it was unbelievable.”

Seaman responded: “How crazy is it that Arsene believed you could go unbeaten and he said it didn’t he?”

“I know,” Bergkamp added. “That, I never can understand. As a player you know as well, you don’t think about that.

“You think about competing for the championship, maybe. But to think about going unbeaten, it’s not really a target.”

Despite the many great teams that have since won the Premier League, Wenger’s Arsenal remain the only side to do so unbeaten.

Many would argue the 03-04 side are the best team the league has ever seen based on the achievement.

It’s interesting to hear Bergkamp talk about Wenger’s comments at the time too. No side had ever avoided defeat in the Premier League throughout a whole season before that year.

The fact that Wenger believed his side could achieve something unprecedented at the time sums up the genius the Frenchman was.
