Dennis Bergkamp names the three Arsenal players who used to amaze him in training

It’s not very often that Arsenal fans get to hear the likes of Dennis Bergkamp talk about the club in the past, so when he does, they listen.

And the Arsenal legend has now been naming some of his former teammates that used to shock him in training.

Bergkamp was a true maverick for Arsenal, a player who will always be a huge part of the club’s history – and someone who Kai Havertz will perhaps hope to emulate.

That being said, it was actually Arsenal’s defenders who used to amaze Dennis Bergkamp in training.

Speaking on David Seaman’s podcast ‘Seaman Says’, Bergkamp named three Arsenal players who used to catch his eye.

Bergkamp said: “The players we had, with [Steve] Bould, Martin Known or Tony Adams in the centre.

“They were different but in training sometimes we played against them, attackers vs defenders.

“And in some moments I was trying to get the ball and would shout ‘yeah, yeah, yeah’. And then I got the ball and I looked around me and I was six yards offside.

“Maybe individually they weren’t the best defenders but as a line they were unbelievable.

“I have never seen that before, how they knew exactly from each other, if one did a step forward the other three would close in at the same time. For me that was an eye opener.”

Of course, Mikel Arteta would probably hope Bergkamp would say the same thing about this current Arsenal team were he involved in training.

Although, the likes of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes may also consider that they can hold their own individually.

Arteta has now built a very solid foundation at the back, one that makes winning games so much easier.

The arrival of Declan Rice seems to have been the catalyst for a more robust Arsenal, one that now reminds of The Invincibles.

It would certainly be interesting to hear Dennis Bergkamp analyse this current Arsenal team, one pushing for its first league title in a long while.

Moreover, with defenders in mind, some may consider that Arsenal need another body in January owing to the absences of both Jurrien Timber and Takehiro Tomiyasu.

However, Arsenal still seem to be most often linked with the arrival of one impressive £85m striker in the near future.
