Everton midfielder Fabian Delph appears to be in for a tough start to life at Goodison Park.
The 29-year-old lasted just five minutes of his debut for the club against Werder Bremen in a pre-season friendly.
Delph was forced off with an apparent groin problem (Daily Mail), and the star will now undergo tests to determine the extent of the damage.
It is the worst possible start for Delph following his £10 million transfer from Premier League champions Manchester City.
The versatile ace had his fair share of injury problems last season and would have been hoping to kick on with the Toffees.
Delph now faces a tough start to his Everton career for the simple fact that his injury will undoubtedly pave the way for new signing Jean Philippe-Gbamin to stake his claim for the team.
The Ivorian has arrived at Goodison in a £25 million deal from Mainz (BBC Sport).
He is viewed as the natural replacement for the departed Idrissa Gueye, and he will surely be brought straight in by Marco Silva with Delph now looking at a spell on the sidelines.
Delph and Andre Gomes would likely have been the Portuguese’s go-to pairing in midfielder, but there is now a chance for Gbamin to impress and force Delph to contend with a substitute’s role.
