A number of French media outlets praised Tottenham Hotspur wing-back Ivan Perisic for his display against Marseille.

Tottenham fans experienced a rollercoaster of emotions during the Champions League game.

Antonio Conte’s charges were simply dreadful in the first half.

Indeed, Tottenham looked set for elimination after Chancel Mbemba put the hosts in the lead.

However, Clement Lenglet drew Spurs level and put qualification back on the table.

Perisic got the ball rolling as he delivered a superb cross with his so-called weaker foot which his teammate put away.

After Lenglet’s goal, both sides pushed hard for a winner, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg striking the crossbar for the visitors.

Marseille should have scored late on when Sead Kolasinac somehow missed an open goal with a header.

And then, Hojbjerg sealed the victory in stoppage time, rifling an effort in off the post.

Footmercato and Maxifoot, two French publications that rated the Tottenham players, named Hojbjerg as their man of the match.

Both also praised Perisic, with one lauding the £180,000-a-week ace’s ‘delicious’ delivery for Lenglet to equalise for Conte’s side.

Footmercato wrote: ‘The 2018 World Cup finalist was entrenched in his camp like his teammates in the face of OM mastery and the very high positioning of Clauss in the first period.

‘His good quality of center spoke with a decisive pass on a delicious set piece deposited on the head of Lenglet.

‘Author of the rescue of the group stage for his team with a block on Sanchez. Valuable late in the game.’

Meanwhile, Maxifoot wrote: ‘On the left side at the start of the game, the Croatian was simply serious by simply defending in front of Clauss.

‘Subsequently moving to the right because of the difficulties of Sessegnon then the entry of Emerson, the Tottenham piston displayed a more offensive face and offered solutions to his teammates.

‘And from a free kick, he was a decisive passer to allow Tottenham to equalize. In the final moments, he even saved his own team from the Sanchez shot.’

Perisic a shrewd acquisition for Tottenham

Spurs bolstered their ranks significantly in summer as they sought to kick on following their top-four finish last term.

Conte worked with Perisic before, so it wasn’t overly difficult for Tottenham to bring the 33-year-old to N17.

Perisic has proven a great acquisition for Spurs and, best of all, it didn’t cost them anything in transfer fees.

Tottenham fans will surely be keeping an eye on how he fares at the upcoming World Cup, if/when his spot is confirmed.

Perisic is in the provisional squad for the 2018 World Cup finalists, as is Spurs cult hero Luka Modric.
