Dele Alli’s goalscoring output is very impressive indeed for a midfielder, which has led to him playing almost as a second striker at times for Tottenham.

But in a crucial week for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, Alli has taken up the deeper midfield role Gareth Southgate used him in during the World Cup in the summer as Spurs have collected huge wins over Chelsea then Inter Milan.

On Saturday evening, Alli showcased his energy and defensive discipline to shut down Blues fulcrum Jorginho before bursting in behind him to ruthlessly expose Maurizio Sarri’s side.

Last night, as Spurs chased a win they needed to keep their Champions League hopes alive, Alli had to be more patient to help his side break down the visitors’ massed ranks.

But when Tottenham needed class and composure as the opportunity to hit the front finally presented itself, it was Alli who arrived into the box before showing his touch and quality to lay on Christian Eriksen for that vital winning goal.

For such a young player, Alli has so many strings to his bow and has shown many of them off in a testing week that Spurs have so far come through with flying colours.

Getting the better of Lucas Torreira on Sunday would cap a stunning week for the Englishman, who looks well and truly back to his best.
