‘Delaying the inevitable’: Danny Murphy suggests Tottenham should sell Dele Alli

Danny Murphy has hinted to TalkSport that Tottenham should sell Dele Alli during the January transfer window if Jose Mourinho doesn’t seem him as part of his plans.

The attacking midfielder has hardly played this season, starting just once in the Premier League.

Alli will have aspirations of making the England squad for next summer’s European Championships but needs to be playing football.

The 24-year-old won’t be happy with another six months of playing European football and will surely seek some regular action.

It has been mentioned in The Sun that PSG are willing to take Alli on loan in January. Murphy doesn’t believe that is very logical though, hinting on TalkSport he should be sold.

He said: “My gut feeling is that Mourinho doesn’t fancy him, it’s as simple as that. He’s got Lo Celso, he’s got Ndombele, he’s getting a tune out of him. That kick up the backside he gave him worked, fair play to Jose, he managed that well.

“If he doesn’t fancy him, sending him out on loan is just delaying the inevitable, isn’t it? Unless you’re thinking about the asset and getting him in the shop window.”

Alli has played 232 games for Spurs since arriving in 2015, scoring 64 goals and registering 56 assists.

TBR View – Big decision facing Tottenham over Alli

Murphy does have a point but you can perhaps see Tottenham’s logic.

Despite seemingly being around for years, Alli is still only 24 and he could have a part to play in the future.

With that in mind, you can understand why they might be hesitant when it comes to selling him.

Alli is on £100,000-a-week at Spurs and if he can rediscover his form then he could return to North London full of confidence.

Mourinho is facing a big decision over the midfielder and it’ll be one he needs to take his time over.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens to Alli in January.
