Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren could be set to play a prominent for Liverpool in the coming weeks.
As many saw on Wednesday night, Reds centre-back Joe Gomez was forced off after a heavy challenge from Burnley’s Ben Mee.
It has since transpired that Gomez has suffered a fractured lower left leg, according to the club’s official website, and will be sidelined for up to six weeks.
It’s a bitter blow for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, who have watched Gomez blossom into one of the best young players in the Premier League period.
Gomez’s rise has been highly impressive, but he’ll be forced to watch on from the stands now – and the situation presents a big opportunity to one of the Englishman’s teammates.
Lovren must seize chance and silence critics
The most logical replacement for Gomez is Lovren.
The Croatian international has been a peripheral figure this term after losing his place to Gomez following a post- World Cup injury.
But it could now be his turn to oust Gomez from the team as the ex-Charlton Athletic player begins his recovery.
Lovren has a major chance now to silence his critics, of which he has many following some big claims regarding his own ability.
He recently declared himself as one of the best defenders in the world, and laid into Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos for making more mistakes than he does.
Lovren has made a number of high profile errors in the space of the past year, but the polarising defender will now surely get the chance to prove himself once more.
