Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has moved to clarify his comments about being ‘one of the best defenders in the world’.
The Croatia international claimed before the World Cup final that he is right up there with the best of the bunch in his position.
As quoted by The Metro, he said: “I took Liverpool to the final of the Champions League, and now with my national team we are in the [World Cup] final. ‘I think people should recognise that I am also one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense.”
In a new interview with Copa90, Lovren was asked for his top five central defenders in the world at the moment. And the names he gave were Sergio Ramos – who he also dug out for getting away with mistakes – Thiago Silva, Raphael Varane, teammate Virgil van Dijk and… himself.
Lovren risk more ridicule, Gomez superior
The Croatian has undoubtedly improved his overall game over the past year, but he’s still made a number of errors along the way.
Awkwardly, Lovren failed to mention Joe Gomez, who has been outstanding alongside van Dijk in the Liverpool defence.
The young Englishman has been exemplary next to the Dutchman and is head and shoulders above Lovren this term.
Lovren may have been injured for part of the season but Gomez’s rise has been undeniable.
It’s somewhat embarrasing for Lovren to be talking this way given the errors he made for Liverpool last season, and it’s emphasised further by how well Gomez is playing.
