Dejan Lovren defends Liverpool players after 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa

Dejan Lovren has defended his old Liverpool teammates on Twitter after the Premier League champions were humiliated at Villa Park by Dean Smith’s side, in a stunning 7-2 defeat on Sunday evening.

Ollie Watkins netted a sublime hat-trick, while Villa skipper Jack Grealish got two. John McGinn and new signing Ross Barkley also found the back of the net for Villa – cancelling out Mo Salah’s brace.

Liverpool’s normal study defence of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson were embarrassed time after time, while Adrian – who replaced the injured Alisson – endured a nightmare performance.

Social media exploded after Liverpool’s defeat, just hours after Manchester United had been humiliated at Old Trafford by Tottenham Hotspur 6-1. But Lovren, now with Zenit St. Petersburg, leapt to Liverpool’s defence.

TBR’s view – Could Liverpool defeat tempt club into deadline day?

The Reds are believed to have completed their business in the market – bringing in Konstantinos Tsimikas, Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota. But could the heavy – and embarrassing – defeat convince Liverpool to spend again?

Certainly, a new back-up goalkeeper could be considered following Adrian’s abysmal display, while another option at centre-back to replace Lovren should also be even more tempting now. Deadline day could spring a Liverpool surprise.
