Dejan Kulusevski has shared what he said to his agent when he learned that Tottenham Hotspur were interested in signing him in the 2022 January transfer window.

Dejan Kulusevski is probably amongst the longer serving members of the current Tottenham squad, following his arrival just over two years ago.

The winger signed on an initial loan deal as Tottenham desperately tried to make signings in the final days of the window to bolster Antonio Conte’s squad as they pushed for a top-four finish in the Premier League, and with that, a return to the Champions League.

It may not have been a deal which captured the imagination of Spurs fans. It appeared to be a move which was convenient for Fabio Paratici to do given his knowledge of Juventus.

Kulusevski had not had the best time with the Old Lady in the months leading up to his move. While he had played in most of Juve’s Serie A games in the first-half of the season, he was rarely getting a full 90 minutes under his belt.

And it seems that he was ready to go by the time the end of the January window loomed. Kulusevski told The Players’ Tribune that he did not hesitate when he found out that there was a chance to join Tottenham.

He said: “One day I asked my agent Ale, “Can you find me something?”

“He was like, “Yeah, it’s gonna be hard,” because it was January 2022, a few days before the transfer window closed, and we were running out of time. But then he called me back and said that Tottenham were interested. 

“I was like, “Yes! We’re leaving. When’s the next flight?”

“He said it left in an hour, so I ran to my room and started packing. I was there with my girlfriend, Eldina, and I just started crying. And then she started crying. We had no idea why. There were just so many things happening at once. We kissed, cried some more, and I left for the airport. No way was I missing that flight.”

An inspired signing

You have to say that the deal has proved to be a masterstroke. Kulusevski was electric during those first few months at Spurs. And he has been one of their most consistent and reliable players since then.

Other players may tend to grab more headlines than the 23-year-old. But Kulusevski rarely lets the team down when he plays for Tottenham.

And given his age, there is every chance that he is going to improve considerably in the years ahead.
