Mason Holgate has posted on Instagram after loan side West Bromwich Albion failed to overcome Aston Villa in the Championship play-off semi-finals – and the upload suggested he is on his way back to Everton.
Coming into the second leg at the Hawthorns after a 2-1 defeat to Villa in the first leg, West Brom had to win that match by one goal to force extra time. They did just that, winning 1-0.
Holgate’s long throw into the box was expertly nodded past Jed Steer into the back of the net, and the scoreline remained throughout the night. It left the two sides to go head to head on penalties, with Villa prevailing.
The 22-year-old impressed for West Brom at right-back and has done so since joining the club on loan in January. But his post read as though he would be returning to Merseyside now that the season is over.
His comments about enjoying his time at West Brom and how he has made “brothers for life” sounds like a farewell, suggesting he is set to return to Goodison Park.
Holgate showed his versatility for the Baggies during his half-season loan. Starring at right-back, he has shown Everton manager Marco Silva that he is more than adept on the right side of defence and at centre-back.
That could be crucial for the Toffees going forward, not only to have a defender with versatility but one that can provide adequate back-up to Seamus Coleman.
It depends whether Holgate will want to remain at Everton to provide cover, rather than start. But it may prove to be out of the player’s hands, with his contract running until the summer of 2022.
