Defender Seamus Coleman is only regressing at Everton

Everton defender Seamus Coleman has a night to forget in the 2-2 draw at home to Watford on Monday and it was another sign that he’s moving backwards in his career.

The 30-year-old was on the wrong end of an unfortunate own goal when the ball bounced off him into his net, as he couldn’t react quickly enough to the ball initially striking the post.

But more alarmingly just moments later he was in a complete mismatch against Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure, who rose above him to score a header inside the penalty area.

Coleman showed glimpses going forward of his attacking quality, but defensively was all over the shop and was given the run around by Roberto Pereyra at times.

The Republic of Ireland international is a senior figure at Goodison Park and the stand-in captain for the Toffees, but has completely gone off the boil this season.

He has struggled defensively on several occasions this campaign in the full-back area and looks an easy target now for opponents.

Coleman has had to deal with a comeback from a long-term injury layout and unfortunately has not been able to get back to his best.

The right-sided flyer is miles away from the extremely high standards he once set that arguably made him the best right-back in the Premier League at one time a few years ago.
