Conor Shaughnessy has confirmed on Instagram that his loan spell with League One side Burton Albion has come to an end and he has returned to Leeds United – but surely he will be on the move again this summer.
Shaughnessy, who turns 24 at the end of the month, left Leeds for a third loan spell away from Elland Road in January – joining Nigel Clough’s Burton as he looked to help the Brewers push for a place in the play-offs.
However, with the League One season ending early and being resulted on a points-per-game basis, Burton have finished the campaign in 12th place – 12 points behind Joey Barton’s sixth-placed Fleetwood Town.
Shaughnessy wished Burton fans the best going forward after clocking up eight appearances before the global health crisis struck for the Brewers, confirming his return to Elland Road on Instagram.
It was the third loan spell Shaughnessy has had since Marcelo Bielsa took over. Bielsa had kept Shaughnessy after taking over in 2018, but after starting a Carabao Cup loss to Preston North End – he was hooked at half-time.
That match was almost two years ago in August 2018, and was Shaughnessy’s last appearance for the Whites. The versatile defender is now set to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Leeds.
But given that the Whites are closing in on promotion and Shaughnessy has failed to build on his 15 senior appearances for Leeds, surely the 2-0 defeat to Preston will be his last senior appearance for the Yorkshire side?#
This summer represents the best – and potentially last – chance for Leeds to bring in some cash for Shaughnessy, even if it is a nominal fee. The 6ft 3in star is surely set to depart this summer.
