Leeds United have suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Birmingham City and many pointed the blame in one direction: Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
Marcelo Bielsa’s team were beaten by a single goal and many will not rapidly forgive the shot stopper for his error as he was caught out by Che Adams’ effort from the edge of the box, whilst he barely covered himself in glory for Adams’ second strike either.
The 21-year-old has undoubted potential, but throughout the opening weeks of the campaign many have pointed to him as one of the biggest weaknesses in Bielsa’s formidable new look team.
With the more than capable Jamal Blackman sat on the bench, Peacock-Farrell’s latest error could prove to be costly. The Chelsea man joined on loan from the Premier League outfit in the summer but is yet to make his Championship debut for the club in what appears to be a strange move.
Blackman was first choice for the vast majority of the 2017/18 season at Sheffield United but has settled for proving a point for the Whites, and following Saturday’s defeat, he could have a chance.
Bielsa will have to make a tough call ahead of Friday night’s fixture against Sheffield Wednesday, a ground where Blackman would be bound to get a far from welcoming reception given his club last season.
In truth though, if Leeds are to continue their push for promotion back to the Premier League, Bielsa needs to put his faith in Blackman as a declaration of intent and continue to develop Peacock-Farrell in cup competitions and wherever possible, despite his admirable faith in the youngster to date.
