Dedryck Boyata has game to forget as Belgium are thrashed by Switzerland

Belgium were dealt a shock yesterday as Switzerland put them to the sword in the UEFA Nations League. Roberto Martinez’s men struggled to get the better of their opponents, with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Jan Vertonghen and Kevin De Bruyne all injury absentees.

Despite taking a 2-0 lead through a Thorgan Hazard double Switzerland soon swept the Red Devils aside with five unanswered goals. Haris Seferovic struck a hat-trick as the Swiss booked their place in the finals of the competition, winning 5-2.

It was certainly not a good day at the office for one Celtic player. Dedryck Boyata enhanced his reputation in the summer after an impressive World Cup with Belgium. It saw him linked with a Celtic exit and upset Bhoys fans with his behaviour regarding that potential move.

This performance would not have had suitors scrambling, other than in the opposite direction.

He lost his man for Switzerland’s first goal and from there it was a highly unconvincing display. Playing on the left side of a three, he was admittedly not helped by the poor performance from Monaco’s Nacer Chadli at left wing-back.

But Celtic fans can do some translating online to see just how unimpressed Belgium fans were with his performance. Many were left lamenting Vertonghen’s injury or Christian Kabasele being ignored once again.

Celtic fans will hope his confidence is not markedly hit by this display and result, with Hamilton awaiting on Saturday lunchtime.
