Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic summer exits would give Celtic perfect excuse to complete John Mahon signing

Celtic and Rangers have both been linked with Sligo Rovers defender John Mahon, according to the print edition of The Daily Express via HITC Sport.

Blackburn Rovers and Derby County are also keen on the young central defender but Celtic have sent scouts to watch him and he would prefer this move.

And Celtic could have the perfect excuse to sign Mahon in the summer if two of their current centre-backs depart.

It looks increasingly likely that Dedryck Boyata is on his way out of Celtic with his contract due to expire in the summer.

And Filip Benkovic is only on loan from Leicester City. Judging by his performances when fit this season, the Foxes will look to keep him.

This could leave Celtic light at the back next season and that could open a door for Mahon.

The 19-year-old is young and inexperienced but has impressed in the Irish top division and could earn his chance to shine at Celtic.

The Bhoys could take a gamble on the teenage centre-half, who could sink or float if fast-tracked into their line-up for next term.

With senior games already under his belt, the Irishman just needs to adjust to life in Scotland quickly and he could become a future star.
