West Ham midfielder Declan Rice has given huge credit to teammate Tomas Soucek, who he’s explained does everything in the centre of the park.
Rice, who partners Soucek in the Hammers midfield, has explained that people don’t realise how much work his teammate gets through.
Soucek, 25, has been a colossus at the London Stadium since he joined and he’s a perfect fit for the Premier League.
The Czech Republic international joined on an initial loan deal last January from Slavia Prague, which eventually turned into a permanent £19million (BBC) one in the summer.
He is an all-action central midfielder that gets around the pitch doing so much defensive work in games, plus he can provide a goal threat with eight Premier League goals to his name already this season.
“He’s so good. I played against him for England against the Czech Republic and I knew then it was going to be a big game and now to have him alongside me in midfield, you don’t realise how much he actually does!” Rice said, as quoted by the club’s official website.
“He runs, he’s strong, he runs, he gets in the box, he’s good in the air, he does everything you want a midfielder to do and I think teams are coming up against Tomáš and thinking ‘I don’t want a battle with him today because if we go hard, he’s going to go even harder’.
“Even when we played at Man United in the FA Cup the week before last and he ran 17k in the game! 17k! All the lads were like ‘That’s not normal, Tom!’ and he just smiled at us.
“Honestly, he is unbelievable and with the season he is having he’s going to be our Player of the Year and he absolutely deserves it and he’s an unbelievable lad as well.”
The Rice-Soucek midfield combination is one that has worked so effectively for West Ham manager David Moyes and it’s hard to pick out any other midfield pairing across the entire Premier League that is performing to a higher standard right now.
Both have been driving forces in the team’s success so far this campaign, with the Hammers fourth in the league table and dreaming of a Champions League finish.
Soucek is a powerhouse central midfielder that is a player supporters now love, especially after a cut to the head in the weekend win over Tottenham didn’t stop him leaping to his feet to defend in the box.
