Ethan Nwaneri is only 17 years old, but he’s currently one of Arsenal’s most important players.
Indeed, amid a serious injury crisis at Arsenal, that has seen Kai Havertz ruled out for the season, Nwaneri has had to step up.
The teenager has been brilliant as of late, and Nwaneri was the best player on the pitch against Leicester at the weekend.
Speaking on Inside Gooners, Perry Groves has been discussing Nwaneri’s ability, and he says that he’d like to see Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard take a leaf out of Nwaneri’s book.
Indeed, according to Groves, he’d like to see Rice and Odegaard take more long-range shots in the same way Nwaneri does.

Declan Rice told to learn from Ethan Nwaneri
Groves spoke about Nwaneri’s willingness to shoot from range.
The pundit says that he likes the fact that Nwaneri is willing to pull the trigger from distance, claiming that Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard need to do similar.
“The thing with Nwaneri is, we know about his creativity, but he actually shoots from 20 or 25 yards. As an Arsenal fan I don’t think we take enough shots, we can be formulaic,” Groves said.
“I want Odegaard and Declan Rice to take this from Nwaneri’s playbook, where when teams are backing off you release a shot, if you start doing that teams close you down and there’s spaces, but if you don’t do that, they will sit deeper.”
Ethan Nwaneri shooting stats compared to Rice and Odegaard
Groves says that Rice and Odegaard need to follow Nwaneri’s example in shooting from outside the box, and he’s not wrong.
Indeed, the stats show that Nwaneri is taking more shots, and more shots from range than his two Arsenal teammates combined.
| Shots per 90 | Shots from outside the box per 9 | |
|---|---|---|
| Ethan Nwaneri | 3.1 | 1.7 |
| Declan Rice | 1.2 | 0.6 |
| Martin Odegaard | 1.6 | 0.6 |
Nwaneri, somehow, at the age of just 17, is playing with less fear and fewer restrictions than two of Arsenal’s most experienced players.
Why aren’t Rice and Odegaard shooting as much? That’s a question that only they can answer, but perhaps they should pull the trigger more often.
James Maddison praised Declan Rice’s shooting ability last year, but after just one Premier League goal this season, we’ve not seen enough of that from the midfielder this term.
Arsenal need to find a way to score more goals in the absence of their attacking stars, and one way to do that is to just take more shots.
