Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has spoken of how Mikel Arteta played a key role in ensuring he stayed at the club.
The Swiss star has been a mainstay of the Arsenal team under Arteta but looked to be on his way out of the The Emirates having been the centre of fans’ frustrations under Unai Emery.
However, since then, he has been revitalised under Arteta and is a key man at the base of the midfield for the Gunners. And speaking to SDA, Xhaka paid tribute to Arteta’s influence for keeping him around.
“One thing is certain, I wouldn’t be in London without him. He was the decisive factor, with his philosophy, with his style, with his idea. I am really grateful to him for that.
“I am indulging Mikel Arteta with the FA Cup victory. It gives him confidence and a certain security.”
Xhaka will be hoping to maintain his place in the Arsenal midfield going forward. This, despite the club being continually linked with moves for both Houssem Aouar and Thomas Partey.
The midfielder was complimentary about Arteta’s purchases in the market too. He added that Willian ‘knows how to win’ while the new contract for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was huge news for the club.
Xhaka’s turnaround remarkable, he should praise himself too – TBR View
Of course, Xhaka is right to point out that Arteta has helped with his career and essentially salvaged it for him at The Emirates.
However, he should give himself some credit as well. He’s been excellent at the base of the midfield for the Gunners and has been integral in Arteta’s methods and ways of thinking panning out so well.
Given his relationship with fans before lockdown, it will be interesting to see if Xhaka gets the warm reception he deserves when supporters do return.
