Newcastle United defender DeAndre Yedlin is set for international duty with the United States. He will play two friendlies against Ecuador and Chile.

But the Newcastle right-back is set for a positional change as the USA explore their options.

USA boss Gregg Berhalter will play Tyler Adams at right-back with Yedlin further ahead on the wing, journalist Paul Tenorio claims.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez should keep a close eye on how Yedlin performs on the wing as this could be a long-term strategy to use at St James’ Park.

Yedlin has the pace and directness to adapt and become a winger but has always played as a full-back.

The 25-year-old is still young and has time to learn a new role, especially as he has all the physical attributes to thrive in his new position.

Ecuador and Chile will provide stern tests for the United States and Yedlin, who will be trialled in a more advanced role.

But if he can emerge from these two games having caused problems for the opposing full-backs, Benitez could be tempted to copy this tactic.

The winger spots at Newcastle are up for grabs and Yedlin could put forward a case for why he should be deployed further up the field.
