DeAndre Yedlin could benefit from a position change at Newcastle

Newcastle United defender DeAndre Yedlin has not hit his best form this season.

Although the Magpies have actually been quite good defensively, the USA international appears to be something of a weak link at the back.

Federico Fernandez has shone for his new club following his summer move from Swansea City. Jamaal Lascelles has been typically consistent. Fabian Schar has impressed in parts and defensive-minded Paul Dummett has continued to show solidity from left back.

But Yedlin has shown he can be a bit of worry when the team is being attacked down his side of the pitch.

As quick as he is, sometimes his starting position is wrong meaning he cannot use that pace to atone.

Yedlin could seriously benefit from playing further forward

Yedlin often showcases his desire to get forward, and it was evident again against Bournemouth on Saturday.

He was instrumental in Salomon Rondon’s first goal, using that blistering speed to get right to the byline before squaring for the Venezuelan.

Perhaps Yedlin would benefit from playing as a right winger, rather than someone whose primary job is to defend.

If Rafa Benitez were to free him of defensive responsibility, it might work in the team’s favour.

The Spaniard has already spoken of acquiring reinforcements for the position in January, so perhaps he is considering this tactical change.
