Aston Villa emerged triumphant in Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Burnley at Villa Park.
Unai Emery‘s Aston Villa charges twice took the lead in the match, but twice the visitors struck back.
Just as it looked like Villa and Burnley would share the spoils, Aaron Ramsey’s foul on Jhon Duran inside the box led to a penalty for the hosts.
Douglas Luiz stepped up and fired his spot kick off the underside of the bar – twice – and into the Clarets net to secure a 3-2 win.
Former Villa boss Dean Smith praised the Brazilian’s penalty and also noted how relieved the players were, spotting what Ezri Konsa did right after the spot kick.

“Great penalty from Douglas Luiz,” Smith said on BBC Radio 5 Live. “That’s one that the goalkeeper doesn’t stop.
“I was just watching Ezri Konsa and he just fell to his knees – such is the relief in getting that goal.”
Aston Villa battle hard to eventually get the better of Burnley
Villa had opened the scoring in the 28th minute. Ollie Watkins drove inside to set up Leon Bailey, who took one touch and then fired past James Trafford via a slight deflection.
However, just two minutes later, Burnley were level. A free kick found Dara O’Shea, who nodded the ball across goal for Zeki Amdouni to nod home.
Villa went on to retake the lead, which they took into the interval.
Watkins was once again the architect, playing a low ball into the path of Moussa Diaby, who made the most of the easy tap-in.
The Villans had plenty of chances to put the game beyond Burnley thereafter, but couldn’t make the most of the opportunites.
Villa were eventually punished for not taking their chances, as Lyle Foster burst through on goal and slotted home on 71 minutes.
All’s well that ends well for the Villans, who climb up to second in the table, level on points with leaders Liverpool.
