Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has given major credit to striker Ollie Watkins for his performance on Saturday afternoon against Crystal Palace, as he helped to inspire them to a 3-0 victory.

The 24-year-old was unable to get himself on the scoresheet for a sixth consecutive Premier League match, but he struck the woodwork and was heavily involved with all three of his side’s goals.

It’s been an impressive step up to the top-flight from the Championship for Watkins, who lead the line so effectively against Palace with his energy, pace and movement.

Bertrand Traore’s early goal meant hosts Villa had a one-goal advantage at half-time, but the second-half display was made even more impressive by the fact they had to play it with 10 men after Tyrone Mings was sent off on the stroke of half-time.

Smith singled out Watkins for his contribution in the Boxing Day win against Palace.

“He was superb. His work ethic, he gives centre-halves problems, he gives holding midfielders problems getting on the ball,” Smith said post-match, as quoted by BBC Sport.

“But his movements really, really good. There is move to come from him, The goals will certainly come.”

TBR’s View:

Villa were missing a real focal point last season in attack, but they addressed that problem brilliantly in the summer window and Watkins has been one of several top signings for them.

The English striker showed his great link up with captain Jack Grealish on the weekend with the pair working effectively on the counter-attack, plus he brings others around him into play with his unselfishness.

He’ll be desperate to score more regularly despite eight goals in all competitions this season, but more importantly he’s proving to be a real asset to the team.
