Dean Smith leaves the door open for Orjan Nyland to keep his spot at Wembley

Nyland produced a big performance as Villa made the EFL Cup final.

Aston Villa are into the EFL Cup final after a late winner from Trezeguet saw off Leicester at Villa Park last night.

Orjan Nyland has seen Pepe Reina come in this month but Smith said he was always going to play against the Foxes and he responded with a superb performance.

Nyland kept out a couple of efforts from James Maddison and that proved crucial late on and Smith has already hinted that the goalkeeper has given him a selection dilemma ahead of Wembley already.

As per the EFL’s official website, Smith said: “Orjan was always going to play in this game. He’s showed me what he’s about. He’s certainly given me a conundrum for Wembley but that’s exactly what I want.”

TBR’s View – Nyland has earned Wembley berth but City scars may make Smith think twice

Nyland’s performances across both semi-finals were sensational and should really prove enough for him to keep his spot at Wembley.

But Nyland was also in goal for the 6-0 thumping by Manchester City in the Premier League and with City looking likely to be Villa’s final opponents, that might make Smith think twice.

Reina was brought in to offer elite experience and he has played in big matches before, and that combined with the memories of Nyland in net as City ran riot at Villa Park may convince Smith to go with the former Liverpool man.
