Aston Villa manager Dean Smith believes that the club are “getting closer” to a new signing and has explained they are looking for a new striker.
The Midlands giants have lost forward Wesley Moraes for the rest of the season through injury and it’s left them extremely light in the final third.
Villa have already signed experienced goalkeeper Pepe Reina to help cover the loss of injured star Tom Heaton and it looks like there will be more to come.
According to Belgian publication HLN, Villa are expected to complete a move to sign Genk striker Mbwana Samatta for around £8.5million.
The 27-year-old forward has 10 goals in all competitions so far this season, including three in the Champions League group stages.
Smith has refused to name any target, but did explain that a new arrival may be close and stated that the club’s sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch (Suso) is working hard behind the scenes.
“I will never name-check any players – I think everybody knows we’ve been looking for forwards,” Smith said, as quoted by the club’s official website.
“We’re making progress, Suso is working very hard every day. Whether we’ll have one in for Saturday I’m not so sure yet, but we’re getting closer.
“The powers that be at the football club are working very hard so we can get a centre-forward on the pitch.”
There is no doubt that Villa need a couple more faces in behind just Reina in January and it’s no surprise to see a striker targeted.
They travel to Brighton on Saturday afternoon for a crucial fixture and it would be ideal to have a new forward in by then, but surely that’s unlikely at this stage.
Smith’s team currently sit 18th in the table in a relegation spot right now, so improving an injury-hit squad while they can this month is crucial.
