Dean Ashton has stressed it’s vital Leeds United keep Marcelo Bielsa during the summer after they suffered heartache in the play-offs.
The Yorkshire club were beaten 4-2 at home to Derby County on Wednesday night, who overturned a 1-0 scoreline from the first leg to progress to the play-off final.
Leeds finished third in the regular season after competing for automatic promotion, but ultimately have fallen short and will be in the Championship once again next season.
Pundit Ashton believes the Whites still have a strong squad to compete again next year for promotion, but highlighted the importance of keeping their manager.
According to the Telegraph, Bielsa wants to see what cost-cutting measure might be in place next season before committing his future to Elland Road.
“They will be absolutely devastated, but once the dust settles there are so many great young players there that they can still bring through,” Ashton told EFL on Quest.
“The key is Bielsa has to stay because of how he’s changed that squad just this season. Go out and buy some players, I don’t think they need that many. The squad is very, very good.”
Bielsa is the mastermind behind Leeds’ success this season, which is why it could all crumble if he leaves after a year at the club.
They may have ultimately missed out on their goal for promotion, but have improved massively in the last year and will surely be one of the favourites for promotion next season if Bielsa remains at the helm.
The Argentinian boss managed to squeeze every ounce of quality out of his squad and turned them into promotion contenders without a major overhaul of the squad.
They have played some really eye-catching football at times and the club is still moving in the right direction, but what happens in the next couple of months is vital.
