Dean Ashton says Adam Armstrong would suit West Ham, amid reported interest

Dean Ashton has claimed that Blackburn Rovers forward Adam Armstrong is someone that would be a good fit at West Ham, amid reported summer interest in him.

According to the Sun, Hammers scouts are set to track the 24-year-old ahead of a potential summer bid to sign the Championship star and he could be sold if Blackburn don’t earn promotion.

The report explains that Blackburn want £10million-plus for any potential sale and that West Ham manager David Moyes is an admirer of his.

Armstrong, 24, is a centre-forward that ex-Hammers player Ashton claims would be a good fit at the London Stadium, but stressed they should have moved to sign him in the January window.

The English striker has 18 goals in just 29 games across all competitions this season for Blackburn, with 17 of them coming in the Championship.

Ashton is baffled as to why West Ham didn’t sign an extra attacker in January, as Sebastien Haller’s sale means they are left with just Michail Antonio as the only available senior forward.

“I just think it’s a massive misjudgement not to have bought in a striker. Especially when you’re in a position of strength, which they were, in a great position. Go out and get a striker for your manager,” Ashton told talkSPORT.

“Armstrong, brilliant movement, quick up front, can play a role for West Ham.”

TBR’s View:

West Ham could live to regret the decision not to bring in a back-up option for Antonio during the second half of the season and their hopes of finishing in the European positions could hinge on his fitness.

But they will need to plan ahead to sign a forward at the end of the season.

Armstrong is certainly someone that looks too good for the Championship this year, which is why an exit from Blackburn looks inevitable at some stage.

He only had a brief taste of top-flight action with Newcastle United, but he’s worked on developing his game in the lower divisions and is a quick, intelligent and clinical striker that could be a great West Ham signing in the future.
