Dean Ashton rants about an average season for West Ham

Ex-West Ham striker Dean Ashton has ranted about the season that his former side have had this year.

The Hammers currently sit 11th in the Premier League table clear from relegation trouble, but with just three games left it looks unlikely they will end up in the top half.

Manuel Pellegrini has been at the helm for his first campaign in charge at the London Stadium and it’s been a mixed first year.

There have been some notable wins against the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United during the season, but on the flip side inconsistency in the league and early exits in both domestic cups.

Ashton feels that the team have perhaps underachieved this season, but does note the amount of injury problems they have had to contend with.

“It’s just been a bang average season and that’s almost more disturbing for the fans because they have spent money,” Ashton told talkSPORT.

“There has been a lot of injures again this season that has hampered them, if they had their full squad available I would expect them to be a lot higher than 11th.

“The best they are hoping for is seventh, seventh is their ceiling with the players they are recruiting and it’s still a massive job for Pellegrini. The problems with the players is they have either been a three or a nine.”

TBR’s View:

West Ham certainly have a talented group of players that are as good as any of the team vying for seventh in the league, but they aren’t going to get anywhere without consistency.

They need to try finish this campaign with some strong results and give Pellegirni a platform to build on.

The likes of Manuel Lanzini and Felipe Anderson are high-profile West Ham players that have to pushing for European football, so next season another mid-table finish shouldn’t be tolerated.
