Liverpool want Ajax wonderkid Matthijs de Ligt, according to Calciomercato recently.

The Reds have improved significantly in defence this season, but a leg injury to Joe Gomez has exposed the shortcomings of the covering centre-halves Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip.

The Englishman has been out of action since November, and the team have looked worse off in his absence.

Lovren and Matip have been sharing the responsibility of partnering mainstay van Dijk, with neither being able to truly convince.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was recently reported (The Sun) as being in the market for another centre-half this summer, and de Ligt would be a major coup.

The 19-year-old is already playing well beyond his tender years and has chalked up 96 appearances since his breakthrough in the 2016/17 season.

It is clear that he is a special young talent and has vast potential to become a leading defender in the game later in his career.

Liverpool will surely be hoping to beat off the competition for his signature, as he could realise his frightening potential alongside his compatriot van Dijk.

The ex-Southampton man has shown himself to be a brilliant leader with a string of commanding displays at the back this term.

He is a fantastic role model for anyone to learn off, not least someone who is from the same country and will naturally have a solid communication.

The evidence is there with the way he has already helped youngster Gomez improve.
