Tottenham face Austrian side LASK on Thursday night in the Europa League group stages, which may give manager Jose Mourinho the chance to rotate his side and give some other players in his squad the chance to play.

It’s unclear on what XI will take to the field for the European fixture, but Mourinho has confirmed (Football.London) that defender Davinson Sanchez will be starting after he attended Wednesday’s press conference.

Sanchez will retain his position in the side from the weekend and he’s got to view the LASK game as another shot to impress Mourinho that he can’t afford to blow.

The 24-year-old has been a regular in the team so far this season, but there is real competition within the squad for a centre-back role with Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier and new signing Joe Rodon also in contention.

He is an all-action centre-back that is strong in the air and makes some great recoveries with his pace, but his rashness and loss of concentration in recent games has been a problem.

Sanchez, who earns £65,000-a-week (Spotrac), needs to find some consistency in his game if he’s going to become a long-term solution in the starting XI.

The Colombia international was part of a backline that capitulated against West Ham on Sunday in the 3-3 Premier League draw and his headed own goal was a poor error.

Despite thrashing Manchester United 6-1 in the previous league game, Sanchez was once again caught out at the back and he conceded a penalty for a rash tackle inside the box.

His decision making at times completely lets him down, but fortunately there is clearly faith from Mourinho and it’s an opportunity for him to put in a faultless display in the Europa League to get over his recent troubles.

However, another error will surely put his starting position under threat.
