Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sanchez has been discussing his performance at right-back in the North London derby at the weekend.

Tottenham have something of a selection problem at right-back this season. Kieran Trippier was not replaced in the transfer market whilst Serge Aurier has not been considered for first-team action so far this term.

Kyle Walker-Peters has been handed the starting role but the England under-21 star was injured for the Arsenal game, as was Argentine defender Juan Foyth.

So Tottenham called on Sanchez. Spurs went on to throw away a 2-0 lead and draw 2-2 with their bitter rivals. Speaking to the Colombian arm of Diario AS this week the Tottenham defender admitted it was difficult for him to adapt to the role.

“Difficult, because it is a position in which I’ve trained very little, I tried to do the best I could against an opponent with strong characteristics in the attack…

“In the end, I was satisfied, although we lost two points.”

Sanchez played occasionally at right-back during his time at Atletico Nacional but since heading to Europe with Ajax he has been playing near exclusively as a central defender.

So it was certainly a big ask from Mauricio Pochettino to slot the Colombian into the role.

Indeed, plenty of Tottenham fans were not impressed by his display. Others felt he did his best in what is a foreign role for the player.

One thing for sure, is that Sanchez will be pleased to be back on central defensive duties with Colombia during the international break.
