Spurs fans have been having their say on Twitter today as respected journalist, Alasdair Gold, defender summer signing and former Wolves man, Matt Doherty.
Doherty was brought in over the summer but has struggled at times. Rotation with Serge Aurier, plus a dip in general results over the last few months have not helped his cause in fairness.
However, he played in the midweek win over Fulham and Gold, writing for Football.London, claimed Doherty deserved some credit for his performance.
Naturally, the Spurs fans were out in force to agree and disagree with Gold’s assessment of Doherty. And on Twitter, the fanbase was well and truly split, although there were a fair few negative comments coming the way of Doherty.
Some Spurs fans, though, joined in a reasoned debate without tearing Doherty apart and had their say in response to Gold’s comments.
Here, then, is what some Tottenham supporters thought in response to Gold’s defence of Matt Doherty.
I agree. I’m shocked at the level of stick he gets. Seems pretty solid most games

Agreed. Defensively did well. Don’t get the hate

I was a huge fan of Doherty at Wolves and was delighted we bought him. However, he just has not performed, if you think last night was good, then how bad has he been. he under hits balls, he over hits balls. Its a foul throw nearly every time, and thrown to an oppo player. cont..

I see your point about doing what’s instructed and playing more defensively, however even a defensive full back should have SOME attacking intent. Every pass from Doherty is back towards the centre backs or square. So frustrating.

Sorry, can’t get on board with this. I thought again yesterday his passing was poor, positioning was wrong, choices on when to go for an interception were questionable. I wanna like him but ultimately he just isn’t good enough and I think we are a weaker team when he plays 🤷♂️

He wasn’t too bad given he had 3 men to mark for most of the game. Still think he’s nowhere near good enough though. Not sure what his attributes are.

Davies was worse but neither are up to the job.
