In December, it was being reported that Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl was fond of German striker Davie Selke. The new Saints manager had previously worked with him at RB Leipzig and the links, therefore, carried genuine credibility.
The Sunday Mirror (11/12/2018; pg 53) was suggesting that the Hertha Berlin man was a target for the Austrian. The report suggested he could be available for around £14 million.

At the time, a deal certainly looked possible. First and foremost, Southampton needed striking reinforcements. Secondly, it did not look like the Berlin club would miss him should they sell. Selke had only scored one goal and provided two assists in 12 games at that point.
However, since the links to Southampton, Selke’s form has been exponentially better.
In the nine games since Selke has provided six assists. His goal at the weekend against Werder Bremen was his third in as many games. Three goals and six assists in nine games is a fantastic run of form and Southampton will wish that he was at St Mary’s with that sort of record.
