Davide Santon has told the Chronicle that he sees Newcastle United’s future under the reign of manager Rafa Benitez, which suggests The Toon will have to offer the Spaniard a new deal.
Benitez is in the final few months of his contract at Newcastle and fans are growing increasingly worried that the ex-Real Madrid and Liverpool boss will not be in the dugout come next season.
Indeed, the Spaniard has been linked with plenty of moves given his £77,000-a-week contract (Express) is now just three months away from ending. A new deal has been mooted by Benitez, at least until the end of the season.
Former Newcastle full-back Santon, who now plays for AS Roma, believes Newcastle’s future is with Benitez as their manager – and that means he will need to sign a new deal if he is to adhere to Santon’s belief.
“I still follow and support Newcastle United as it’s a team close to my heart,” Santon said.
“I worked with Rafa Benitez in Inter Milan when I was younger, he is a great guy. And I think will do very well managing Newcastle through to this next phase. I wish them all the best.”
There is absolutely no doubt that Benitez is perfect for Newcastle. He has got the best out of a side that should be languishing in the bottom three.
With a bit of investment from owner Mike Ashley, Newcastle can transform under Benitez. If they can generate a squad that – on paper – should finish mid-table, the proof is there for Benitez to exceed expectations.
Benitez simply has to stay and Ashley needs to do everything within his power to keep him. That includes opening his cheque book in the summer.
