David Weir has applauded the impact of Everton defender Ben Godfrey

David Weir has stated that Ben Godfrey has exceeded expectations since he joined Everton, adding that he’s a player that supporters now love.

Everton signed Godfrey last summer in a £25million (BBC) deal from Norwich City and most expected it would take time for him to make his mark at Goodison Park.

But the English defender has quickly become a regular in the Toffees XI and has been performing at such a high standard for Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

The 23-year-old is a powerhouse centre-back and that’s surely his long-term position moving forward, but the pacey defender has shown his versatility by impressing at times in full-back roles.

Ex-Everton defender Weir has explained what he admires about Godfrey.

“He’s really stepped up to the plate. We all knew he was a good player when Everton signed him and had high hopes, but he’s exceeded those expectation by the level of his performance, both in central defence and also in full-backs as well,” Weir told Football Pass.

“He seems to get Everton. You can tell the fans, although they are not at the games, you can tell they like him. They like his work ethic. They like his hunger to play. He’s got a real intensity about the way he defends.”

TBR’s View:

Godfrey’s £25million signing at the start of this season looked a risk on paper, as his only previous top-flight experience was being part of the Norwich City team that were relegated in the 2019/20 campaign.

But it looks like he’s maturing every week now at the Merseyside club and has earned the trust of Ancelotti.

He performed superbly in Everton’s historic win at the weekend at Anfield over rivals Liverpool and it’s a fair comment that he’s someone fans have really taken to instantly.
