David Unsworth says Everton have a 'great' young midfielder in their ranks amid Doucoure injury woes
Everton boss David Unsworth has waxed lyrical about Toffees academy midfielder Tyler Onyango following his injury comeback.
The 18-year-old had been sidelined since April, when he sustained a serious ankle injury in an FA Youth Cup tie back.
Onyango returned to full training a fortnight ago following six months of rehabilitation.
And he finally made his return to action in the Everton Under-23s’ Premier League 2 victory over Leeds United on Monday.
Onyango delivered an impressive display as the Blues came from two goals down to run out 4-2 winners over the Whites at Southport FC.
“He was great, he played really well,” Unsworth told the Everton website after the game.
“He’s been training for a couple of weeks and he got some minutes in a bounce game during the international break.
“Anything past 60 minutes tonight was a bonus so to get 80 minutes from him is terrific and I’m so glad to see him back.
“The physios have had nothing but praise for him for his work ethic and he’s a great guy.”
Onyango, who joined Everton aged eight, is a “skilful, athletic midfielder” who “reads the game well and boasts impressive stamina”.
He made his senior debut in January this year, coming off the bench in the FA Cup fourth-round victory over Sheffield Wednesday.
Onyango’s return to action could give Rafa Benitez food for thought in wake of Abdoulaye Doucoure’s injury layoff.
He suffered a foot injury against West Ham and is reportedly expected to be out for a lengthy period of time.
