David Seaman has shared what Arsene Wenger did while incredibly angry after Arsenal were beaten by Liverpool in the 2001 FA Cup final as he reflected on Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.

Mauricio Pochettino looked pretty devastated as Chelsea were beaten at Wembley. Certainly, many Blues fans will be wondering how exactly they failed to win against a Liverpool team which included so many inexperienced players in extra-time.

Pochettino has had to deal with a lot of scrutiny, particularly when it comes to his record in finals. He was unable to lead Tottenham to silverware. And Chelsea have now lost another final – their first under the Argentinian.

David Seaman can empathise with some of those Chelsea players. Despite his glittering career, he did have to taste defeat in a couple of finals, perhaps most famously in 2001 when Michael Owen scored twice late on to win the FA Cup for Liverpool.

And perhaps we now have an idea of what Pochettino would have done with his runners-up medal, with Seaman telling Seaman Says that Arsene Wenger had little desire to keep his 23 years ago.

“No-one remembers who came second, they don’t,” he said.

“We got beat by Liverpool in a cup final at the Millennium Stadium, and Arsene Wenger threw his runners-up medal in the bin when he came into the dressing room. He was that angry.”

Mauricio Pochettino must be sick of runners-up medals

Pochettino did win the league and cup while with Paris Saint-Germain. But obviously, few are lining up to praise managers for winning domestic honours with PSG.

He is still awaiting the first trophy from his time in England. He came incredibly close while with Spurs, but his side could not quite get across the line.

And now Chelsea have lost their first final of his tenure. So psychologically, it may only become harder and harder to take that final step.
