Arsenal have got the better of Liverpool for the third time in the last four encounters on Thursday night with a penalty shootout victory in the League Cup en route to the quarter-finals.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta kept his domestic cup record intact after a 0-0 draw against the Reds preceded spot kicks, with Bernd Leno the hero with two saves before Joe Willock scored the crucial kick.

Arsenal were eager to make amends against Liverpool just three days after falling to a 3-1 defeat at Anfield in the Premier League, though as expected, both sides made widescale changes.

The Gunners and the Reds played out a 5-5 draw in the competition last year before Jurgen Klopp’s side won on penalties, but this time round, both sides struggled in terms of cohesion and fluency.

Liverpool had most of the possession throughout the game and weighed in with 16 shots, seven of them on target, as well as winning eight corners, but Leno’s efforts ensured the scoreline was evenly poised come 90 minutes.

Arsenal legend David Seaman, watching proceedings, joked on Twitter about coming on during the shootout:

Luckily there was no need to, given Leno’s heroics in between the sticks in the 5-4 shootout victory, cue a happy Gunners goalkeeping icon:

Arsenal are next in action against Sheffield United – the team against which Seaman pulled off one of the greatest saves of all time, in 2003 – in the Premier League on Sunday.

In the League Cup quarter-finals, meanwhile, Mikel Arteta’s charges will be up against Manchester City in December.
