David Seaman has told Sky Sports News (Monday, 12.35pm) that he believes the sacking of Jose Mourinho as Tottenham Hotspur manager will have a detrimental effect on the club’s preparations for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Man City.

Spurs have relieved Mourinho of his duties just six days before the Portuguese boss was due to lead his side into a cup final on Sunday. But with two games this week against Southampton in the league, and then City on Sunday, Mourinho has left.

Many have since questioned the timing of Mourinho’s sacking. While many believe it was probably the right thing to do, they do not understand why Mourinho has been sacked on the eve of a cup final – when Mourinho has won 12 of 14 career finals.

Arsenal and England legend Seaman – who also played for Tottenham’s Sunday opponents City – believes that the sacking will only have a bad effect on the Spurs squad ahead of this weekend’s match. He thinks it will disrupt their preparation.

“I can’t believe it, the timing is all wrong,” Seaman said. “When they initially signed him, they wanted to win trophies. But to do this right at the beginning of the week, has really shocked me. It’s massively upsetting and unsettling.

“You’re getting ready for the game – as a player you want to be settled. You need everything to be calm, especially ahead of a game against Manchester City. You want everything to be right. I’m shocked, and I’m shocked it has happened this week.”

TBR’s view – Can Tottenham still win Carabao Cup?

What is crucial is that Levy, if he is to make an appointment before Sunday, makes said appointment as soon as possible. Bringing someone is crucial if he is to do so, or, Spurs need to place their faith in Ryan Mason and Chris Powell this week.

Yes, they can win the Carabao Cup. Firstly, they need to win against Southampton to develop some momentum and then build on Manchester City’s FA Cup defeat to Chelsea. Yes, there is a chance of Spurs winning, but the timing lacks sense.
