Arsenal are lagging behind in the title race at the moment.

The Gunners are some way off catching Liverpool at the top of the table, and while Gary Neville thinks Arsenal can win the league, Liverpool are favourites in the eyes of many.

Luckily, the January transfer window is open and Arsenal can start to think about bolstering their squad.

Arsenal need a striker this month according to Paul Merson, but, unfortunately, making new signings is easier said than done.

Indeed, according to David Ornstein, speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast, Arsenal may not be active this month and are likely to simply stick with what they have right now.

Arsenal unlikely to be busy in January

Ornstein shared what he thinks Arsenal will do in this transfer window.

The journalist says that the Gunners will likely stick with what they have, claiming that fans may not be happy about this.

“I think by and large that they are going to go with what they’ve got, which again will not be music to the ears of many fans who are baying for signings as Arsenal look to compete for a trophy that many feel Arteta needs to deliver or face some pressure. Personally, I think he’s done a fantastic job at Arsenal and got them competitive again, and let’s see how the rest of this season goes.”

Premier League champions’ January business analysed

As Ornstein says, Arsenal fans may not be happy to hear that January signings aren’t likely.

However, that said, you don’t necessarily need winter additions to win the Premier League.

Indeed, of the last 10 teams to win the Premier League, only five new signings were made in January by sides that would go on to become champions.

As you can see, eventual champions often aren’t that busy in January, and even when they are busy, they don’t necessarily always make game-changing additions.

Aymeric Laporte would become a key player at Manchester City, but Takumi Minamino, Juan Cuadrado, Daniel Amartey and Demarai Gray were never super-important players at their clubs.

Whether or not Arsenal have enough to win the league is up for debate, but as history shows, you don’t necessarily need a big January transfer window in order to win the Premier League title.
