David Ornstein says Pedro Neto is the 'recruitment priority for Arsenal'
David Ornstein has claimed that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s ‘recruitment priority’ in the last few days of this summer’s transfer window is to sign Pedro Neto from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Gunners allowed Nicolas Pepe to join OGC Nice on loan this week. That leaves them short in the wide areas, and with just five days left in the window, they are trying extremely hard to replace the Ivorian.
David Ornstein says Pedro Neto is the transfer priority for Arsenal
Neto has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal over the last few days.
Fabrizio Romano claimed this week that the Gunners will make a big push to sign the Portuguese winger, while fellow journalist Paul Brown reported that both Neto and Wolves are aware that Arsenal want to sign him.
Ornstein, who was among the first to report Arsenal’s interest in Neto, believes that the 22-year-old is the ‘recruitment priority’ for Arteta’s side in the final few days of the window.
He said on the Handbrake Off Podcast: “They are still active in the market – that’s in terms of a potential incoming and outgoings too. Incoming – we know Arsenal would like to bring in a wide player. Ideally, that player would be Pedro Neto of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
“He is now the recruitment priority for Arsenal. He’s a player that they’ve liked for a long time. Now is the time Mikel Arteta would like to move for him.
“There has been dialogue for more than a month between Arsenal and Jorge Mendes, his representative, who also plays a key part in operations at Wolves. Mendes has also been discussing it independently with Wolves.
“Wolves are insistent that they don’t expect him to leave before the deadline. If they are to sell, you suspect the price will be very high. But Arsenal are exploring this, however unlikely this may be.”
Arsenal really could do with a new winger before the window shuts.
Pepe was never really going to get a lot of game time in the Premier League had he stayed, but the Ivorian would’ve been a regular in the Europa League. Now that he’s gone, Arsenal only have Marquinhos and Reiss Nelson as backups.
It is no surprise that Arteta is keen to bring in one more winger before the end of the transfer window, and Neto would be a truly ‘sensational‘ signing.
However, with just a few days left, Wolves will surely demand a mammoth fee to let him go. That could complicate things for Arsenal, but they should do everything they possibly can to get this deal over the line.
