David Ornstein says Liverpool had ‘opportunities’ to sign £59m Man City star before Pep Guardiola got him

Liverpool have been one of the busiest clubs this summer, but they were very quiet in the last few windows.

The Reds signed just Federico Chiesa last year, and seeing their incredible position in the table, they decided against signing anyone in January.

The Premier League champions have strengthened heavily in this window with the signings of Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez, and they are keen to bring in more players, especially in attack.

The Reds could’ve strengthened their frontline in January too, but David Ornstein has revealed that they decided not to for one reason.

Liverpool had ‘opportunities’ to sign Omar Marmoush before he joined Manchester City

Omar Marmoush was one of the most exciting names in Europe during the first half of last season.

The Egypt international was absolutely incredible for Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring 20 goals and providing 14 assists in just 26 appearances before he left.

A number of clubs in the Premier League were keen to sign the 26-year-old attacker in the winter transfer window.

Liverpool were interested in Marmoush too, and Ornstein has now claimed that they had opportunities to sign him. But, the Reds just weren’t ready to pay as much as Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City did for him, which was an initial £59 million (BBC).

While speaking about Liverpool’s interest in Alexander Isak, Ornstein said on The Athletic FC podcast: “It would be very interesting because Liverpool tend not to spend that sort of money for that age profile.

“Isak is 25, not too long until he will be 26. They had opportunities to sign players in January like Marmoush, for example, who was the same age at the time that Isak is now, 25, but they didn’t push to the financial limits that Manchester City were prepared to go to.

“So, this (signing Isak) would be a departure (from their transfer policy), but maybe you make departures for really special players.”

What’s the latest between Liverpool and Alexander Isak?

Liverpool approached Newcastle United for Isak earlier this week, informing them that they would be prepared to pay £120 million to sign the striker.

The Magpies, unsurprisingly, showed no interest in letting the Swede leave, which is probably why Richard Hughes has begun working on another deal.

TBR confirmed that Liverpool are advancing on the signing of Hugo Ekitike from Marmoush’s old club Eintracht Frankfurt and have even tabled a bid.

An agreement between the two clubs has not been reached yet, but Liverpool continue to work on a deal to sign the talented French attacker.

As for Isak, Newcastle are unlikely to change their stance, especially as they have failed in their own pursuit of Ekitike.
