David Ornstein has shared the information he has been given about a potential deal for Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United or Unai Emery’s Aston Villa for Jonathan David.

The Athletic journalist has suggested why it is unlikely that United or Villa would be able to sign David from Lille in the January transfer window.

So, what has been reported about Manchester United, Aston Villa and Jonathan David? Let’s take a look.

Jonathan David to Manchester United or Aston Villa unlikely

Well, Lille forward Jonathan David has been linked with Premier League duo Manchester United and Aston Villa.

Football Transfers reported this week that United and Villa both are “very interested” in a deal for the 23-year-old Canada international striker. Newcastle United also reported to be interested.

The report noted that David, described as a “phenomenon” by former Gent manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck, has told Lille that he is eager to move on.

The Athletic journalist David Ornstein has now given his take on the rumour. He has said that United cannot afford to sign the 23-year-old in the January transfer window and does not think that Villa will make a move to sign a player on a permanent deal.

When asked if there is any truth to United or Villa pursuing David, Ornstein said in The Athletic: “It’s not one I’ve heard credibly, Anthony. That’s not to say he isn’t a player clubs like these are considering.

“But in the case of United, the money it would require to make such a signing is not available this month, unless they can generate the required funds through departures.

“As for Villa, the expectation until now has been a quiet window that perhaps sees them make a loan signing (not something you would imagine Lille allowing for David).”

My View: Lille unlikely to sell Jonathan David in January

I do not think that Lille will sell Jonathan David to Manchester United or Aston Villa in the January transfer window.

Lille are aiming to finish in the top four of the Ligue 1 table this season. David is an important player in the team.

The 23-year-old Canada international striker has scored five goals and given one assist in 14 Ligue 1 starts for Lille this season.

The youngster found the back of the net 24 times in 36 Ligue 1 starts last season, while in 2021-22, he scored 15 goals in 38 league appearances in 2021-22.
