David O’Leary has told TalkSPORT on Monday (8.40am) that he wants Leeds United to bring in a top-class centre-forward this summer – and has heaped praise on the work done by owner Andrea Radrizzani.

Leeds United celebrated their title-winning status on Sunday evening with an excellent 3-1 win over Derby County at Pride Park. Leeds play host to Charlton Athletic at Elland Road on Wednesday, when they will hold aloft the trophy.

Patrick Bamford was rested on Sunday evening and was a late substitute, as he remains the club’s first-choice striker having netted 16 goals this season. However, he has come under criticism this season.

Former Leeds manager O’Leary – who took the Whites to the Champions League semi-final – has urged Leeds to consider signing a replacement for Bamford, and applauded the ownership of Italian businessman Radrizzani.

“I was so proud to manage them, they’re a brilliant club,” O’Leary said. “They’re in great hands with the owner. They are spending money wisely and it’ll be fantastic to see Bielsa up there. He will know [where to spend money].

“Patrick Bamford has done great, but another centre-forward will be very important. People behind the scenes are good and they won’t get carried away, I’d like to see a top-class centre-forward.”

TBR’s view – O’Leary is right, but other areas need improving too

Leeds certainly do need a striker to rival Bamford – especially with Jean-Kevin Augustin struggling to make a lasting impression. But that is not the only area of the squad that requires strengthening.

Deals for Jack Harrison and Illan Meslier are expected to go through, while Ben White needs to be re-signed by the Whites. Cover for White and Liam Cooper is also required. A partner for Mateusz Klich, too.
