During his own time at Manchester United, David Moyes was in charge for 51 matches, yielding a points per match ratio of 1.73.
For comparison, Sir Alex Ferguson’s record at Man United was 2.02 over a span of 1,490 games, explaining why he is arguably the best manager of all time.
Moyes certainly wasn’t the worst of United’s managers in the post-Ferguson era, but it was eventually decided that the club needed to think bigger, with the greatest of respect.
Of course, after sacking Erik ten Hag, who’s point per match record was 1.84 after 128 games, United are on the cusp of starting a new era under Ruben Amorim.
Amorim enjoyed the perfect farewell party at Sporting CP this week, beating Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League, something that will make him even more welcome at Old Trafford.
David Moyes sets Ruben Amorim an immediate challenge at Old Trafford
That being said, when speaking on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast, Moyes compared his appointment to Amorim’s upcoming arrival, and highlighted some key differences.
The former United boss felt as if there is a ‘really talented’ crop of players at the club right now, but felt as if Amorim needed to up their work-rate immediately.

Moyes said: “I have got to say he is in a completely different situation. I was very fortunate to take over the champions of England at the time. I was coming from a different [angle]. And probably coming into a dressing room which had great respect for Alex and what he had done.
“I think the players now might be looking at saying by the way if we don’t step up, the manager might be coming from a stronger position because these players are going to actually have to step up.
“It’s not always calling the players out but I see it where players are quite happy to hide behind managers at the moment and let the managers take the hit for it, when I could do with some of them coming out and saying I’m not at it at the moment. We are not getting much of that.
“I actually think Man United have really talented players, but I think work-rate, that would be the first thing.”
Harry Maguire determined to prove a point to Ruben Amorim
Of course, after Amorim arrives to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy, who still has two games to oversee as interim boss, there will be several players looking to prove a point.

At the top of the list, Harry Maguire wants to earn a new United contract – he’s got no interest in leaving the club right now.
Should Amorim deploy his familiar 3-4-3 shape, it should suit Maguire in truth, who is currently out of contract in the summer unless United exercise a clause in his deal.
Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho have also been criticised recently – two more players who will hope for better fortunes under Amorim.
There’s a lot for the new boss to tackle, and Moyes’ advice seems fairly spot on.
