David Moyes says Everton have a player who is absolutely 'perfect' for the World Cup

West Ham United manager David Moyes has praised Everton central defender Conor Coady ahead of the World Cup.

Coady went to his first major international tournament at Euro 2020 but did not play a single minute of football as England made the final.

In the Times, Moyes has praised the character of Coady, who has been selected for his first World Cup and Gareth Southgate for picking him.

Moyes on Coady

He wrote: “Managers have to think about the social dynamics when putting squads together.

“When I signed Jesse Lingard on loan for West Ham United in 2021 it was principally for his playing ability, but also because of what I knew about him as a person.

“It was the time of Covid bubbles, which were hard going for everyone in sport, and I knew Jesse would bring a certain spark and sense of fun.

“During his time with England, Gareth Southgate has shown great knowledge of how to create good camps and assemble squads with good cultures.

“He surprised people by putting Conor Coady in his Euro 2020 squad, but Conor proved the perfect type — a leader in the dressing room who is all for the cause; a winner who wants to play, but still appreciates being in the squad even if he’s not on the pitch.”

Coady must have worried about his place at the World Cup when Bruno Lage made it clear he was not part of Wolves’ plans this season.

It is bizarre for a club captain, who has been a mainstay for many years, to get dropped like that and Coady did not have long to find a move and get the gametime he needed to go to Qatar.

He moved to Everton on loan and has swiftly established himself as so important for Frank Lampard, as well as allaying concerns he could not play in a back four.

That could help his England prospects of playing at this tournament, especially with Harry Maguire, and to a lesser extent, Eric Dier going into the tournament struggling for form.
